Bronx Art Helps Shed Light On Gentrification In The Borough

Most of the artists at the second edition Bronx Art Expo have a strong connection with the borough, like Dova, a painter shown behind the desk. (Nicolas Lupo/NYCityLens)

NY City Lens  attended last week’s Bronx Art Expo organized by Hydro Punk where artists showcased their work, while also shedding light on the changing conditions in the borough, driven by new development and rising rent costs.

The orgianizers of the Expo want to create new ways of defending the borough’s identity, especially against gentrification and displacement of people and small businesses.

  1. It is interesting to me that a group of people from the Dominican Republic want to “save uptown.” Preserving one’s “culture” comes from within – not from keeping other people out. They have to remember that before they were here, the Bronx was predominently Jewish, Irish and Italian. The same people that are most likely pro-immigration want to keep others out. Doesn’t make sense to me! Cities and their demographics are constantly changing. Celebrate and keep your culture by all means, but don’t tell others they aren’t welcome here.
