Bronx Gets High-profile Council Chairmanships

Gotham Gazette released a comprehensive list of Council Committee appointments as the members begin work under new speaker Corey Johnson.

Of note, Bronx Councilmember Rafael Salamnca will chair the influential Land Use Committee and Councilmember Ritchie Torres will head a newly-created committee on Oversight and Investigations.

Interestingly, there were no Bronx members assigned to serve on these important committees:  Economic Development, Criminal Justice Services, Cultural Affairs, or Environmental Protection.

I was sorry to see that there are no Bronx members assigned to the Cultural or Environmental Protection committees; there is so much activity and need in those areas that could use more attention from NYC as a whole. Of course, Economic Development also could use a Bronx “eye” but the Land Use Committee under Mr. Salamanca’s chairmanship can be very influential in terms of positive (i.e. inclusionary) real estate development.
