At Saturday’s Bronx YMCA Open House visitors got a taste of what has made the ‘Y’ not only a special place in the Bronx, but a vital place for people of every age.
Take a look at this video for a tour of what was going on during the Open House and see what opportunities are available for children, parents, grandparents, and families.
“This was the kickoff for the new year,” Executive Director Sharlene Brown told thisistheBronx. “It’s a chance to join the Bronx ‘Y’ without having a ($100) joiner’s fee and it gives us a chance to open the doors to the community so they get a taste of our programs.”
(Note that the waived joiner’s fee is available until the end of the month)
The range of progams is staggering. Already with child care, camps, after- school and leadership programs, civic engagement activities, as well as a startling array of fitness and athletic programs, this year’s lineup features two new ones that the ‘Y’ is excited about. Both cut to the core of a major issue in Bronx life.
There’s a new weight loss program that comes free with membership. The idea, Brown said, is to,”put you into a support group, meet weekly, and talk about your goals. We provide ‘how to lose weight’ coaching, and exercises.”
Also, there’s a blood pressuring self-monitoring program to teach members how to monitor blood pressure, eat right and exercise, all the things that can lower blood pressure.
To become a Bronx YMCA member, come to the ‘Y’ at 1 Castle Hill Avenue and ask for Membership Director Bharathi Ayer or call 212-912-2490.
