Chief of Department Monahan Still Loves his Bronx

The NYPD’s Chief of Department, Terence Monahan

For Irish-American Heritage Month, Irish Central profiled the NYPD’s 40th Chief Department, Bronxite Terence Monahan. He opened up about his past, Irish background, and love of the Bronx.

Many of his family members, including his brother and father, were also members of the force and when they told him about their work, he was inspired to follow in their footsteps.

A year ago, Chief Monahan was interviewed on thisistheBronX TV as part of the Bronx Chamber’s Irish Heritage Celebration.

Despite his job as leader of the 40,000 member police force and an office atop One Police Plaza, Monahan admitted that his passion is still with patrolling the streets of New York to keep people safe. He also said directly that he prefers his hometown borough – the Bronx.

There are numerous cool revelations in the interview. For example, some don’t know that while he was stationed in Washington Heights, he even made an appearance on the show Cops . It was one of only two times the acclaimed TV show worked with the NYPD.
