The critically acclaimed film, If Beale Street Could Talk, just took its wide release this weekend. The NY Post covered the opening of an exhibit this weekend that honors the man who wrote the book, De Witt Clinton alum, James Baldwin.

God Made My Face: A Collective Portrait of James Baldwin opened in Chelsea and offers a “multimedia glimpse” into the life of the author. It features, among other things, photographs, portraits, and encased first editions of some of his work.

Bladwin’s contentious relationship with his stepfather inspired him to write “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” but the display also emphasizes the positive influence of his mother. The exhibit was organized by drama critic Hilton Als, and will run until February 16 at the David Zwirner Gallery, 525 W. 19th Street.
