Environmental Groups Question Storm Surge Barrier Proposals

(Uploaded by Medicalfools / Transferred by Gobonobo – Wikimedia Commons)

Curbed New York has an informative report on the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) multi-million dollar proposals to build storm surge gates and other barriers to combat sea level rise.

There are five proposals that are all different in size and cost, but proposals 3B and 4, which respectively cost $43 billion and $32 billion, will affect the Bronx River, Hutchinson River, and Westchester Creek.

Different Barriers, like the $318 million 10,000 ft Pelham Barrier in the Hutchison River, would be built in all the water bodies.

But groups like the Bronx River Alliance and the Hutchinson River Restoration Project are concerned that the environment is not being considered before the proposals are approved and that this will negatively affect wildlife living conditions.
