Poverty in the Bronx: Simulation
March 15 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
BPHC is excited to invite Medical Residents to an informative and experiential program focused on the impact of poverty on our community. Poverty has a direct link to poor health as evidenced in the Bronx where families live with significantly higher rates of chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions.
During the simulation, participants will assume roles in low-income families trying to provide for basic necessities and shelter with the help of community services. Through this activity, participants will experience the obstacles and stress people living in poverty face daily and how these circumstances affect their health and access to healthcare.
At the end of the program, attendees will be able to better understand how poverty affects health equity in the Bronx, enhance their understanding of personal unconscious bias, and identify opportunities to improve health equity in serving their patients.
