Former Inmates Want Rikers Closed Now

News12 the Bronx reports that former Rikers inmates and local advocates held a meeting detailing harmful experiences at the jail and why it should be closed soon rather than 10 years from now, as plans would suggest.

The conference was held at BronxWorks Betances Community Center, where ex-prisoners said that the city’s plan to close Rikers and break it down into four smaller jails around the boroughs needs to happen faster.

Even though bail reform is helping alleviate some stress, the former inmates cited unethical practices by staff and the need for more help for female and mentally ill prisoners as reasons for faster change, says News12.
