Happy 45th Birthday, Hip Hop!

Three founders of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Melle Mel talk about its roots on BronxNet’s BronxTalk.

Hip Hop is said to have been created on August 11, 1973 by DJ Kool Herc in the west Bronx.  That makes this past weekend its 45th birthday.

To celebrate, The Boombox assembled 60 of the genre’s biggest milestones for ‘hip hop heads’ to reminisce over.

Hip Hop was created by Herc during a birthday party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue and is based on the elements of deejaying, emceeing, breakdancing, and graffiti.  Hip Hop Wired provided some definition and history to the anniversary.

In the above clip from BronxNet‘s BronxTalk, Herc talks about the moment he created it and Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Melle Mel offer their own memories.
