Two schools in Fordham Heights will be merged starting this upcoming school year. City Limits reported that while the co-joining of the schools is in an effort to maximize the strength of both schools, parents are worried about safety issues among other things.
According to one parent, East Fordham Academy of the Arts and the Academy for Personal Leadership and Excellence (APLE) are both home to gangs, and he feels it would be better to eradicate their presence before merging. Other parents, as well as students, fear overcrowding.
Proponents of the union say it would give the East Fordham students greater advantages, as APLE receives extra funding and an added hour to the school day due to its Renewal program designation.
The DOE also says it has never received any gang reports for either of the two schools.
