Step into the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) in the middle of Saturday Academy and you won’t know where to turn first. On the first floor peek into karate where the youngsters are ‘sparring’ or stop into tutoring where children are quietly focusing on a classmate who is reading aloud.
A floor below is a captivating dance class where children boogy in unison to the irresistable ABC by the Jackson 5 and right next door, it’s ceramics where youngsters show off the little bowls and figurines they’ve just glazed.
In the big basement gym it’s gymnastics, where children are flying on the rings, cartwheeling on the balance beam, and tumbling.
At noon, some of the youngsters switch classes, maybe into cooking, African dance, or basketball and other kids come in for their favorite activities, too.
On Saturdays, throughout the MMCC building on Dekalb Avenue in Norwood, are priceless opportunities for young Bronxites to be occupied healthfully and productively in just the kinds of quality, supervised, organized programs that Bronx parents crave for their children.
“We want to be as creative in program offerings as possible,” said Director of Youth Services Mike Halpern, “and provide quality instructors who not only teach, but serve as positive role models and mentors to the children. This helps them not only foster connections to the staff but to each other and become a part of the world outside of their school buildings. Our Saturday offerings are designed to expand their academic and social experiences.”
Saturday Academies will shut down for the holiday but the Winter Sessions will begin on January 12.
MMCC is located at 3450 Dekalb Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467
