Facebook and Twitter users are used to activity being dictated by algorithmic calculations. According to the Times Telegram, now the NYPD is using similar technology to identify crime patterns to help solve crimes.
In the past, crime comparisons would be done in more time-consuming fashion by sorting through reports of similar crimes that could have happened in other parts of the city. But with the new technology, immediate similarities can be made with a simple search of the millions of crimes in the Department’s database.
The article illustrates the effectiveness of the tactic with an anecdote of a thief who robbed a Bronx Home Depot and recently committed a parallel crime in Manhattan.
