Tapping into the Bronx’ well-earned reputation for individuality, Fordham Plaza will transform into the Bronx Night Market once a month from now till the fall (the last Saturday evening of each month). The plan is not for a benign stroll in the park, but an exciting, cutting edge, food-filled, fun-filled, music-filled, and yes, drink-filled evening under the stars done as only the Bronx can. Circle Saturday, June 30 on your calendar. That’s the kickoff. But there’s also July 28, August 25, September 29, and October 27.
Forty handpicked food vendors representing the borough’s diverse culinary offerings will be there to feed you. They incude City Tamale, Fiasco Arthur Ave, Healthy Holic NY, La Masa, Conti’s Pastry Shoppe, Next Vegan Stop, Turtle Cove, and MP Fish, Fry, & Soul, Empanology, Tripla Panna Ice Cream, and Millie Peartree Fish Fry & Soul Food.
While local singer-songwriter The Bryan Durieux Project, fusion band Consumata, and DJ Sabronxura will provide the entertainment, according to organizers, the real stars of the show will be the people of the Bronx who come to boogie down.
“This is not going to be the same old thing,” said Marco Shalma of the BLOX, the creative force behind the events. “We’re entering new terroritory, here: the Bronx at night. And the idea is to take the best of Bronx culture and put it out for everyone to enjoy.”
When asked about using the newly remodeled Fordham Plaza as a location for the Bronx Night Market, Wilma Alonso the affable Executive Director of the Fordham BID similed and said with just right right Bronx ‘tude, “It’s about time, right?” On a serious note, she added, “Fordham Plaza is an iconic spot and it’s important to put life into it to show what the Bronx is all about.”
Admission to the event is free (vendors will set their own costs). Festivities are from 4:00pm – 9:00pm
