Last week thisistheBronX publisher Gary Axelbank, who is also the host of BronxTalk on BronxNet, read to the children at the Children’s Corner Learning Center on Eastchester Road in the Hutch Metro Center as part of the school’s “learning through experience” philosophy. He read three books to a dozen four-year olds in the Pre-K classroom and judging from the video and photos, they loved it!
“Reading aloud and sharing stories with children builds vocabulary and fundamental literacy skills,” said Cynthia Carroll, Educational Director of the Children’s Corner Learning Center. “We focus our curriculum around learning through experience. We can’t always show our students a hungry caterpillar eating through pickles, and oranges, and ice cream pops, but we can read out loud, exposing a deeper lesson and unlocking an infinite world of imagination.”
After the special guest reading session, the learning continued as the teachers had the children draw their own pictures about what they heard and saw.
“This way the children retain what was read,” Ms. Carroll said. “They also are encouraged to express themselves as they each have different interpretations. In all, it was a great experience and we hope Gary will come back in the future.”
