WEEKDAY MAGAZINE – Ode to an Old Clock

By Dominique  Le Frapper

February 5, 2019

Listen! Listen! Can you hear it?
Sssshhh! Do you hear it now?
Tic, tock. Tic, tock. Tic, tock.. Tic…!
This is no antique store grandfather clock.
It is my own Grandmother’s clock.
Tic, tock. Tic, tock.. Tic…!

It is now a century old
And to me worth its weight in gold.
Its round, time-yellowed face
Marks more the years than the hour,
While the hands pursue their daily race
As if moved by their own power.
Tic, tock. Tic, tock.. Tic…!

Inside the crenelated wood box
Tiny levers, wheels, springs and cogs,
Some very slow, others quite fast
Are busy turning the future into the past
Tic, tock. Tic, tock.. Tic…!

Perched on the mantelpiece in the living-room,
It pricks the silence of the afternoon,
And, if like me, you listen real hard,
What you’ll hear, is my Grandmother’s heart.
Tic, tock. Tic, tock.. Tic…!
