The decision to close down Rikers Island and how it will be replaced has been in the news regularly, but what then will become of Rikers Island itself? According to Curbed New York three proposed laws could possibly transform the jail into a renewable energy center.
The Renewable Rikers Act, if passed by City Council, would make the Department of Environmental Protection the sole owner of the island. The DEP would then create a wastewater treatment plant study to see if a facility there could replace other active plants.
Curbed says, if passed, the bills could help the city produce 1,000 megawatts of solar energy, which can support 250,000 residences.
