Last Sunday, Fox 5 NY visited Cedar Playground to celebrate Hip Hop’s 46th birthday with music pioneer DJ Kool Herc..
Herc, whose real name is Clive Campbell, immigrated from Jamaica and moved to Morris Heights. He is called the father of Hip Hop because on August 11, 1973 at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Herc hosted a Back-to-School jam that would eventually establish the Bronx as the genre’s birthplace.
Fortune goes further into this history, saying that the party lasted from 9pm to 4am, with 50 people being able to witness Herc’s classic ‘Merry-Go-Round’ spinning technique.
Check out this short clip of thisistheBronX publisher and BronxNet host Gary Axelbank’s interview with the icon in 2007 as he explained how he came upon his inventive technique that changed the course of music and culture.
