Kingsbridge Road Merchants Feeling Squeezed

The Norwood News has an eye-opening story about Kingsbridge (KB) Road merchants who feel that their businesses could be sold right out from under them. Operating without the protections leases would provide, the merchants, some of whom have served the community for years, have seen their properties advertised for sale along with five-year leases.

It’s part of a recent survey of KB businesses that showed a wide majority being forced to pay high rents they can barely afford and nearly half are working without leases.

Unsaid in the article is the spector of a changing economic dynamic in the region and the potential gentrifying affect of the aniticipated Kingsbridge National Ice Center across the street.

  1. I just read the article. There are so many reasons why this is despicable. I wish there were answers for the tenants (business owners) for dealing with this, but the city and county don’t seem to care. These small business owners have put their life and savings into starting these businesses. I hope that those considering starting a small business will be advised to insist upon a lease – and for more than a year.
