Riverdale Greenway Project: Why Them and Not Us?

MTA’s Metro-North committee requested approval from the board to award a $33.6 million contract to Arch Associates for work on an upstate portion of a sprawling greenway trail — not to Riverdale, where some community leaders have pushed for years for a greenway along the Hudson. Metro-North is planning on connecting trails and highways in Putnam County at a cost of $33 million. Charles Moerdler, an MTA board member, is supportive of this project, however he’s wondering why that can happen, while the long sought-after greenway project in Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil languishes.

According to The Riverdale Press, Community Board 8 was told they had to supply their own funds in order to have public access to the Hudson, which is along Metro-North tracks, for the greenway. According to the Press, Moerdler believes some money should be allocated to a greenway further south, especially since a recent feasibility study indicated that the plans are reasonable.

However, Catherine Rinadi, Metro-North president, called the Riverdale greenway plan an “independent project.”
