In an effort to give two Bronx communities maximum input into upcoming development and other resident concerns, WHEDco (Women’s Health and Education Corporation) is conducting surveys of the Bronx neighborhoods of East Crotona Park and Wakefield.
“We interviewed merchants, community members who traverse the commercial corridor, and Southern Boulevard commercial property owners,” said Kerry McLean, WHEDco’s Vice President of Community Development. “We were able to channel that information into a proposal based on what community members were saying they wanted in their neighborhood. As a result, we were a conduit for this information to the city, elected officials, and the community board.”
The idea to survey two neighborhoodsfrom different parts of the borough was not arbitrary. According to McLean, WHEDco had surveyed Crotona Park in 2010 and these 2018 survey results will provide important perspective from then to now, after the Jerome rezoning was approved.
WHEDco is also looking at Wakefield because, according to McLean, the neighborhood is the focus of a zoning study by the department of city planning.
“This is in advance of a rezoning so we as an organization can be equipped with current data and information so that we can be, once again, advocating for what the community members who live in the neighborhood are identifying as their own needs.”
The deadline for both surveys is October 1.
